In its fifth generation, Engelhard Arzneimittel GmbH & Co. KG primarily develops, produces and sells pharmacy only herbal medicinal products. Continuous research and the continuous optimization of the products have made the family-owned company one of the leading manufacturers of over-the-counter medicines. With the expansion of its location in Niederdorfelden, Hesse – the largest construction project in the company’s history to date – Engelhard is reacting to the strong growth: by 2020, a new office building with an integrated company restaurant and a new production facility with a high cleanroom class will be built on the company premises. It is the wish that the flat hierarchies, the partnership-based cooperation and the transparent structures that characterize the company will also be visually reflected in the new buildings. All employees were actively involved in the planning process with the help of a methodically guided, participative approach.

In future, the new office building will be Engelhard’s face and the central reception area for all visitors to the plant. The foyer serves as a connecting part between the company restaurant and the modular office and meeting areas. The fully glazed head sides of the two two-storey cubes, a glazed atrium in the center of the building and an inserted glass café area, which serves as a creative space, create the desired openness and transparency. The strong attachment to nature of the manufacturer of herbal medicines is reflected in the green exterior areas, which can even be used for meetings.

In addition to functionality, great importance is also attached to an attractive working environment in the production building: a high proportion of glass in the facade and the interior walls provide a strong visual reference and light-flooded rooms. The packaging lines are located on the ground floor of the two-storey cube. An existing hall is connected to the new filling area via a connecting corridor. The production of pharmaceuticals with corresponding class D clean rooms is located on the upper floor.
